Cayuga Community College hosts “New York Remembers” Exhibition

Cayuga Community College will host one of 30 “New York Remembers” exhibitions as the state recognizes the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday.

Cuomo, the New York State Museum and the National September 11 Memorial and Museum announced the locations for the exhibitions that will feature several never before seen artifacts. The artifacts include a trailer used by families visiting ground zero with photos and messages, damaged emergency vehicles and aluminum and glass from the World Trade Center buildings.

According to a news release from Gov. Cuomo’s office, all artifacts are being transported and installed using existing state resources and the locations of the exhibits are in a public building or space, or were provided to the state at no cost.

Cayuga Community College President Daniel Larson welcomes the exhibition to the campus. “We are honored to be able to house this artifact from the World Trade Center that serves as a visual reminder of the lives lost and destruction caused on that date almost 10 years ago,” Larson said in a statement. “We encourage community members to take a moment, come to campus, and reflect upon this piece of history, remembering the outpouring of compassion that united Americans with each other and with our friends around the world.”

CCC plans on holding a public event to debut the artifact later this month. Other nearby cities -- Geneva, Ithaca, Syracuse and Watertown -- will host exhibitions. The 30 locations will be open beginning the week of Aug. 29 through the end of September. All exhibitions will be open on Sunday, September 11th.

“Every community across New York felt the impact of the senseless acts of terrorism that claimed thousands of lives just one decade ago,” Cuomo said in a news release. “These exhibitions will give New Yorkers in towns, villages and cities all across the state a gathering place to once again stand as one community to make sure we never forget those who lost their lives on Sept. 11 and to embrace the spirit of unity that brought us together on that day of devastating tragedy.”
