Auburn Beautification Commission Summer Garden Tour
Auburn Beautification Commission (ABC) will host the Summer Garden Tour 2011 on Sunday, July 17 from 1 – 5PM. The group is currently seeking Auburn gardens maintained by community-minded plant lovers who are ready and willing to share the fruits of their hard labor with the public. Small secret spaces, rock gardens and herb plots, opulent perennial landscapes, Monet inspired water gardens, and enticing vegetable victory gardens are all welcome on the first annual tour. Home interiors will not be included.
The Garden Tour will start and finish at Hoopes Park Clubhouse with refreshments and directional maps distributed that describe the featured 10 – 12 stops. This event is a fundraiser for ABC; tickets are $10 in advance or $12 “at the door.” Pre-sale tickets will be available after June 15 at the Auburn Downtown Partnership BID office, 128 Genesee Street. Hours are Monday – Friday from 9AM – 5PM.
Garden Tour committee members are Susan Marteney, Sally Price, Sue Talbot, Laurie Turo and Nicole Hulik. Please visit the ABC website, or contact committee members by June 1st if you are enthusiastic about showing off your garden on July 17.
A not-for-profit 501-c-3 run by a 12 member volunteer board, ABC works independently and cooperatively with other community organizations on projects such as park improvements; Adopt-A-Spot; Downtown flowers with the Auburn Downtown BID; Downtown Holiday Tree; the Community Mosaic Project partnering with artists and foundations; and Auburn Around Auburn, a themed sculpture competition.
The most recent cooperative project is Osborne Park located at the corner of Grover and Osborne Street. For many years, the small park was just a square of unadorned grass. Today, it is a playground with slides and swings and re-constructed architectural details and fencing along Osborne Street. An unveiling is scheduled for June when the final touches are completed.
