31st Annual Quilts=Art=Quilts Exhibit

On View October 30 - January 8

Quilts=Art=Quilts is the Schweinfurth Art Center's 31st annual juried quilt exhibition. The Art Center has long recognized the importance of quilts as a visual medium, and has been presenting quilts in an art gallery setting since 1981.

Quilts today are just as likely to be made to hang on the wall as they are for comfort. No longer bound by function, quilters are expanding the boundaries of the art form. While still honoring quilting traditions, many quilters are pushing the limits of the medium with use of sophisticated sewing machines and a wide variety of surface design techniques. Quilts on view in the exhibit Quilts=Art=Quilts express the diversity of styles, techniques and designs in contemporary quilt making.

Style & Technique

Quilts range from those based on innovative interpretations of traditional block quilts, to pictorial quilts, to abstract designs. Techniques vary from traditional piecing and hand quilting to machine thread painting and appliqué. Many artists use surface design techniques including hand dyed, printed and painted fabrics, allowing for greater control of color and fabric design.

Quilts=Art=Quilts 2011 includes over 85 quilts by 77 makers from across the United States and beyond. The annual exhibit, now in its 31st year has become a holiday tradition at the Schweinfurth Art Center and is one of the longest running Quilt Art exhibits in the country. In addition to the annual exhibit, the Schweinfurth Art Center offers a variety of workshops in quilting and fiber arts at the Art Center and through its annual conference Quilting by the Lake, held each July in Syracuse, NY.
