"Good News" from Auburn

The City of Auburn is pleased to announce that the first annual Founder's Day event will take place on Saturday, June 6, 2009. Founder's Day will be an annual festival celebrating the founding of the City of Auburn and some of its most influential citizens.

Each year, the event will encompass a different theme. For 2009, the City will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the statehood of Alaska. The City has always enjoyed a special connection with our 49th state due to the instrumental role that William H. Seward, one of Auburn's most famous native sons, played in the United States' purchase of the Alaska territory. This year, the connection will be celebrated with a daylong festival, which will include the following activities:

  • A parade through Downtown (beginning at 11AM)
  • A ceremony following the parade with a guest speaker
  • Arts and food vendors
  • Music and entertainment throughout the afternoon
  • An evening dance with the Joe Whiting Band (beginning at 7PM)

The majority of these activities will take place along Genesee Street between North Street and William Street. The road will be blocked to traffic for most of that day until the dance is over (approximately 10PM).More information on the day's activities will be forthcoming as details become available.

Any area business or community organization that would like to participate in the parade is encouraged to plan on doing so. Cash prizes for the best Alaska-themed float will be awarded. Open parade registration will continue through May 22nd.

For more information on Founder's Day, please contact Founder's Day Committee Chairperson Sheli Graney at (315) 252-0950 or sheligraney@yahoo.com.
