"Good News" from Auburn

Quilts=Art=Quilts“Quilts=Art=Quilts” is the Schweinfurth Memorial Art Center's (SMAC) renowned annual juried quilt exhibition. The Art Center has long recognized the importance of quilts as a visual medium, and has been presenting quilts in an art-gallery setting since 1981. This year, 87 quilts have been selected for the show, and the total number of quilters is 67.  The show will once again feature quilts from all around the world.

Q=A=Q has continued to expand and evolve over the years; they’ve added categories for contemporary quilts, and now also offer workshops, lectures and “Trunk Shows” that take place on Sundays, and are a sort of ‘show and tell.’

Stephanie Schuster, who organizes the trunk shows, said the talks are meant to introduce the public to the work of area quilt-makers. While “Quilts = Art = Quilts” includes quilt artists from all over the county, only quilt makers from the region are invited to speak at the trunk shows.

“They are opportunities to really examine someone's body of work and their journey as a quilt maker,” Schuster said. “We get to hear what they have to say as a person and an artist.”

About the Jurors

Cynthia Corbin, Woodinville, WA
An artist, quilter, and teacher, Cynthia Corbin draws on her love of both folk art and abstract art in her work, in which she explores dyeing and painting, and intensive machine quilting with a problem solving, seat of the pants, approach to quilt construction. Cynthia's art quilts have been published and exhibited throughout the United States and Europe, in exhibitions such as Visions, Quilt National, CraftForms, and Fiberart International. She lectures and teaches nationally, drawing on her passion for developing each student's individual voice.  As an artist, Cynthia has devoted herself to extensive study, working to deepen her understanding of the processes that drive her work.

Bruce Hoffman, Philadelphia, PA
Director of Snyderman-Works Galleries, one of the country's leading contemporary craft galleries. He holds a Bachelors degree in Fine Art in painting from Temple University's prestigious Tyler School of Art. His curatorial work has been recognized in reviews, articles and publications such as Fiberarts Magazine, American Craft Magazine, the Philadelphia Inquirer and the New York Times. In 2008 his 6th International Fiber Biennial hosted 93 international textile artists and was pivotal in a city wide fiber extravaganza, FiberPhiladelphia, hosted by the University of the Arts with 26 exhibitions taking place in the Philadelphia region.

Denyse Schmidt, Bridgeport, CT
A former graphic designer and graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, and a former professional seamstress, Denyse Schmidt grew up in central Massachusetts, surrounded by the textile mill towns prevalent in that area. As owner of Denyse Schmidt Quilts (DSQ), she brings these eclectic influences together in quilts characterized by simple graphics and rich color. Denyse reinterprets tradition to make modern functional quilts that are fresh and offbeat.  Her couture and custom quilts, have been in production since 1996.
