Business Spotlight: North Brook Farms
North Brook Inc. is a diversified manufacturing company with product offerings in the agricultural, equine and commercial/industrial markets. Their products range from an animal comfort mattress and horse arena footing to alternative building and barn supplies mostly made from recycled materials. As a company, they strive to deliver simple, cost effective solutions to their markets. North Brook adheres to the creed of "searching for a better idea," which offers innovative solutions for their customers.
North Brook Farms has been marketing and manufacturing cow and equine comfort products since 1989. Peter Kyle discovered the benefits of using rubber matting under cows in his own dairy operation. At the family farm in Weedsport he used shredded-recycled rubber covered with a heavy industrial-grade fabric. Thus the first "cow mattress" was created. The cow’s response was immediate, and its comfort was evident in its condition and cleanliness on the mattresses. From that point on, their business concentrated on creating various products that assist with the comfort and support of livestock in all areas.
North Brook Farms is the manufacturer of the revolutionary TravelRight footing surface that is dust free without the need to water. Through an analysis of the traditional issues in the ring- dust, watering, maintenance, inconsistent leg and tendon support - Peter Kyle, in conjunction with two other partners, (TravelRight, LLC) created a variety of arena surfaces/arena amendments using a unique recycled blend with the goal of providing a safer, more stable surface for the horse, as well as a healthier environment for both the horse and rider. It was an opportunity to incorporate recycled products already in use by North Brook Farms.
Their Industrial/Commercial product line provides a plastic alternative for various applications within the agricultural, marine and construction markets. Their products are easily installed and maintained for optimal performance in high traffic areas. The line includes wall paneling, flooring, ceiling liners, plastic and plywood sheeting and linings.
North Brook Farms has grown and evolved steadily. It incorporated in 1994, due to a broader demand for the company's products. It is currently relocating their main operations from Weedsport to 89 York Street in Auburn, a 9-acre, 63,000 sq. ft. facility that once housed S&L Spark Plug.
Building tenants, including ElderChoice, will remain at this location. North Brook staff are currently moving their products and equipment, and waiting for renovation upgrades to be completed. In the meantime, they and are using their Weedsport facility for back storage and business transitioning. Peter Kyle said he hoped to be in by the end of this year.
