New Executive Director of Downtown Auburn Buiness Improvement District Announced
Auburn, NY – The Downtown Auburn Business Improvement District (BID) is pleased to announce the appointment of Michele Tarnow as Executive Director. Michele Tarnow brings to the Downtown Auburn BID 15 years of marketing management and business development experience in both the public and private sectors. Ms. Tarnow has experience working with a variety of organizations from start ups to Fortune 50 companies; including Hewlett Packard and Eastman Kodak.
She has extensive expertise in business planning, strategic marketing, fundraising, and project management. Ms. Tarnow was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Poland as a business development consultant immediately following the fall of communism in the early 1990s.
She holds a Masters degree in Sociology from Syracuse University and a Bachelors of Arts degree in Journalism, Marketing, and Advertising from the University of Oregon. Ms. Tarnow resides in Skaneateles and is an active member of the Skaneateles Rotary Club where she holds the position of Youth Exchange Officer and Member of the Board of Directors. Additionally, she is actively involved in the Group Study Exchange program through Rotary which fosters professional development of young professionals in Central New York.
The Downtown Auburn Business Improvement District is a membership organization of residents business and property owners, not-for-profit organizations, and local government entities. The Downtown Auburn Business Improvement District is committed to enhancing the appearance, economic viability, and quality of life
of the community through collaborative efforts in advocacy, business development, and community marketing and promotion.
The Downtown Auburn Business Improvement District strategic plan constitutes a blueprint for building on the foundation and the momentum we’ve enjoyed over the last few years to create a more vibrant downtown.
Since its inception in 2001, the Downtown Auburn Business Improvement District has dedicated its efforts to enhancing the attractiveness and economic vitality of the downtown area by building on both the history of successes and new initiatives for growth.
Accomplishments to date include:
- Securing $50,000 grant to actively attract businesses to the downtown community.
- Securing (2) $200,000 NY Main Street Grants.
- Creating a Downtown Beautification Crew to keep downtown clean.
- Creating and distributing the Award winning Experience Downtown Auburn brochure.
- Working with the City of Auburn on the State Street redevelopment.
- Working with the City on the Downtown Streetscape Project.
- Initiating business recruitment efforts.
- Addressing on-street parking problems.
- Welcoming nearly 45 new business/services to Downtown Auburn.
- Open Air Art Program to paint downtown flower pots.
- Installation of mural in Downtown Auburn.
- Launching the www.auburndowntown.org website.
- Gathering all downtown vacancies in one area and continually sends updates on new listings to all area Realtors.
- Cayuga County Office of Tourism award for “Outstanding contributions to Tourism in Cayuga County” in 2005.
