Auburn, Is a Great Place!

Auburn is a great place to live! That is coming from someone who has lived in Chicago, Ill.; Atlanta, Ga.; Rochester and a number of other places. I think residents of Auburn tend to forget what a great place Auburn and central New York are and all the assets that we have so close by.
I am not originally from Auburn, but have lived here for the last five years. I found myself falling into the same mindset of many that live in Auburn but was reminded how great the area is at a birthday party for one of my son's friends. In the chaos of a birthday party for a 3-year-old, I was able to take part in a few adult conversations and happened to talk with a couple that had moved here from the Boston area. They had nothing but rave reviews for the area - the school systems, the amenities, etc. And had specifically moved here to bring up there children.
On another occasion, I was attending a garage sale of new neighbors down the street and, out of curiosity and because of the job I do in Auburn, I asked why they moved here. They told me they were looking for an affordable, nice place to live that they could bring their family up in. They have three children and moved from down state. The husband works in a business downtown, and the wife is able to stay at home with the children because the area is so affordable to live in.
As I get back into the groove of being back at work from maternity leave from my second child, I think to myself, why five years ago we moved to Auburn. And my answer is so that we could start a family and live in a beautiful area that had so much to offer. Also because it would be affordable to have a family.
In the past five years, I think from the view of an outsider, that downtown Auburn has made many great improvements that will continue to attract families and businesses to the area.
The BID has many different programs under way that are working to attract businesses, such as the Main Street Program and the Buxton Project. We are working to make downtown a more appealing place to live and work by supporting the Streetscape project that the City of Auburn is working on and by employing a beautification crew member and overseeing the downtown flower program. BID is also working to install new murals in the downtown area.
So my challenge to you, the citizens of Auburn, is to take your blinders off and get out and experience all that downtown and the City of Auburn has to offer. Try a new restaurant or local retail establishment. Attend the local theaters and museums and start to invest in the Heart of the City, Downtown Auburn. We need you to start taking an interest in the city that you live in to help with the revitalization efforts and to be the advocates for Downtown Auburn. Let's let everyone in on our secret -that Auburn is a great place to live, work and play!
