"Good News" from Auburn
 

The purpose of this national research study is to evaluate the economic impact of spending by the nation’s nonprofit arts and culture organizations and the event-related spending of their audiences during fiscal year 2010. This new study will build on our three previous national economic impact efforts (published in 1994, 2000, and 2005) to document in unprecedented scope and detail the key role played by the nonprofit arts industry in strengthening local economies.

This highly-regarded research methodology has repeatedly proven to be credible and accurate. Arts administrators, legislators, advocates, media, and others from across the country regularly use our data to demonstrate the economic power that the arts and culture wield in their communities. During the past 20 years, surveys have been conducted in hundreds of U.S. communities ranging from Alaska to Florida to Maine to Hawaii, population (3,000 to 3 million), and population density (rural to large urban).

Local Customization for Auburn
As one of the local and statewide study partners, Auburn will help Americans for the Arts by collecting data from both cultural organizations and individual arts patrons in your community. This data will enable Arts in America to measure in a reliable and affordable manner the economic impact of Auburn’s nonprofit arts and culture industry in terms of four key areas of the economy:

  • Full-time-equivalent jobs supported within Auburn
  • Personal income paid to residents of Auburn
  • Revenue generated for local (city/county) governments in Auburn
  • Revenue generated for the state government (if applicable)

There are two areas studied: (1) the economic impact of spending by nonprofit arts and culture organizations, and (2) the impact of event-related spending by their audiences.

Steps in the Process
Provide a comprehensive list of nonprofit arts and culture organizations. Participants are required to create as complete a list as possible of all nonprofit arts and culture organizations located in the Auburn Enlarged City School District.

Survey the eligible nonprofit arts and culture organizations on your list. Americans for the Arts will provide a proprietary survey instrument designed to capture key data from the eligible nonprofit arts and cultural organizations on your list (e.g., expenditures, revenues, attendance).

Collect at least 800 arts audience surveys in your community. Americans for the Arts will provide a proprietary survey instrument designed to measure the dollars spent by arts patrons as a direct result of their attendance to events that take place in Auburn. The Auburn Historic & Cultural Sites Commission is responsible for collecting a minimum of 800 “audience-intercept” surveys at events that take place in Auburn during calendar year 2011 at a minimum of 15 different cultural events.

Custom Deliverables for the City of Auburn
In May 2012, Americans for the Arts will provide a CD-ROM to Auburn’s Historic & Cultural Sites Commission containing a customized 30-page final report on the economic impact of spending by nonprofit arts and culture organizations and the induced spending by their audiences. The report will include comparison data from other communities that participated in the study. This information will be available in PowerPoint as well, to share findings with the community.
