Local Actor Portrays Captain Jack on his Halloween Pirate Ship: Q & A with Rick Martinez (a.k.a. Captain Jack)
How did the event start and how long has been going on?
This is the 5th year anniversary of the pirate ship event. My wife and I came up with the idea, and have since incorporated a food drive into the event, since we don’t charge admission to come in, people can donate a canned good instead.
What preparation does it entail, who helps you with it?
Me and my best friend Harry Babbit do the installation. It takes about 4 weeks to complete, and we get started in September.
Any new features this year?
Yes, this year we're doing the “Psycho” sideshow, plus there are always different displays set up inside the ship.
What feedback have you gotten from people that come?
We’ve had an awesome response to the ship, people just love it, and think the food collection is great for the community.
What's your inspiration for doing it?
I love Halloween and I'm a frustrated artist and actor/ham and wanted to give back to the community in my own special way.
Captain Jack’s lair is located at 148 Perrine Street. The event runs October 22, 23, 29 & 30, hours are from 7 – 10PM. On Halloween, just the ship is open from 5 – 7PM. You can visit Captain Jack on Facebook or reach him by phone: 315.253-2133.
