Summer Cottage Rentals
Planning a trip back to Auburn for the summer, and want to stay on the lake? Here’s a “how-to” guide to help you along…
According to an agent from Auburn’s Lake Country Real Estate, if you are wondering what the current price range is to spend a week on either Owasco or Cayuga Lake its $650 - $3000, depending on the property’s location and amenities. Providing a security deposit is standard procedure, yet the amount is returned in full- if at the end of the stay- no damage has occurred. Most places rent from Saturday to Saturday, and will have specific check in and check out times to consider if you are traveling a far distance.
Be sure to ask exactly where the property is, specifically, is it close to any attractions or a store, etc.? Remember, the east side of the lake offers the sunset views, if that is an important factor for you. Consider what day trips are available from your location. For example, Cayuga Lake area offers visitors’ access to Ithaca, Aurora, the Cayuga Wine Trail and numerous state parks. Owasco Lake is close to Auburn, Emerson Park, Skaneateles and Moravia.
Some rental places are carry in – carry out, meaning anything you bring in, you must take with you when you leave, including all garbage. Don’t assume housekeeping is provided, in most cases it is not. Be aware of local recycling laws, the City of Auburn currently recycles glass, aluminum, cardboard and plastic. So, these items can be recycled in town.
Remember that not all places are pet-friendly, and if they are, they may charge an additional fee to host a pet. Find out the maximum number of guests the property can accommodate, so everyone has a proper place to sleep. Ask if bed linens are provided, in most cases guests will need to supply their own. Inquire if the cottage’s drinking water comes from the lake, or from the City’s public source. You may want to bring bottled water just to be safe.
If you are vacationing with elderly relatives or children ask details about your access to the lake. Are there many steps, or is it level lake frontage? Keeping an eye on the children from a high deck may be a nuisance. Inquire if the property has its own dock, and if there is a boat or canoe to use? (They are marinas that rent boats and kayaks listed on the Cayuga County Office of Tourism site www.TourCayuga.com if they aren’t included.) Finally, does the rental have a BBQ, TV, cable, or internet access? These things will come in handy with inclement weather.
