Agricultrual employment in Cayuga County

Guess what? In last month’s summary, we didn’t include some important statistics on agricultural employment in Cayuga County.

According to the Association for Enterprise Opportunity and 2002 data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Cayuga County is home to 3,963 sole proprietors and 886 addition businesses that employ themselves and a total of 6315 people. These micro-enterprises account for 18.2% of the 34,778 total private non-farm employment.

The 2002 Census of Agriculture farm employment is still a tough number to find, but here’s how Cayuga County otherwise ranks:

  • Second in N.Y.S. and 39th in the U.S. for the value of livestock, poultry and their products; milk and eggs and others
  • Fourth in N.Y.S. and 76th in the U.S. for the value of cut Christmas trees
  • Sixth in N.Y.S. and 33rd in the U.S. for the value of corn for silage
  • We have 1289 operators of 881 farms; some farms have 3+ operators
  • The market value of Cayuga County farm production is $128,040,000 up 7% when compared with 1997
