“Call to Action: Developing a Blueprint for Our Region’s Future”
Facilitated by Senator Michael F. Nozzolio
A focus group of twenty-two concerned citizens met in early November ’06 to design a blueprint for the future, identify the necessary action items needed for implementation, and then share their recommendations with the public to strongly encourage their support.
During this process, the group assessed the strengths and weaknesses of our community and brainstormed ideas to increase economic development. The best concepts were further researched; then reports were drafted, revised and adopted. These topics include Cultural Development, Infrastructure Technology, Health Care, Riverfront Development, Cayuga Community College’s Institute for Innovation & Entrepreneurship, Watershed Protection and
Job Development.
The Focus Group recommendations represent a call to action for local and regional leaders in government, education, business and industry. The challenges also require all members of our community to work together in partnership to achieve the important objectives of making our area a more attractive and viable place for future generations to call home.
The group has presented their recommendations to the Cayuga County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors; the Chamber’s constituents that were present at the ‘07 Economic Forecast Luncheon, the Cayuga County Legislature and Auburn City Council. All of these organizations, individuals and bodies of government have fully endorsed the plan, and an open “town hall” meeting is scheduled for Saturday, February 24th at 11AM at Cayuga County College’s Auditorium for more public input. “Schine's Facade Uplifts City”
By Tom Woods
“The unveiling of the refurbished facade at the Auburn Schine Theater two weeks ago was another step in a long process toward bringing this piece of Auburn's once vibrant downtown back to life.
The Cayuga County Arts Council, under the direction of President Dia Carabajal, has done yeoman's work in securing the grants and raising funds to restore the art deco theater to its original glory. There is still a lot of work to be done to make the theater usable, but it is an attainable goal. I urge anyone who can to make a donation to the Arts Council to help bring a major piece of downtown's history back…”
